Elizabeth Lewis Williams, University of East Anglia
I am currently working on a Creative Critical PhD which considers the particular nature of the Antarctic as a place, and how this might best be represented poetically. The creative element of the project is a series of linked poetic sequences exploring the experience of being a scientist living and working in the Antarctic shortly after the International Geophysical Year. The experience of imagining Antarctica is also an important part of the work, and gives rise to a poetic consideration of perception, communication and representation. The critical part of the project involves a study of archive materials – base journals, reports, letters and memoirs, as well as poetry – in an attempt to define what constitutes a ‘poetry of fact’.
