Ben Maddison

Ben Maddison, University of Wollongong

Ben Maddison has a background in labour, colonial and working class history. His work is grounded in critical Marxism, and often revolves around the conceptual twins, commodification and the commons. His book Class and Colonialism in Antarctic Exploration, 1750-1920 (Pickering and Chatto, 2014) is a ‘history from below’ of Antarctic exploration. He is currently writing The History of the Southern Ocean (Routledge, 2017), a book that focuses on the varying ways that humans have related to the Southern Ocean from c. 30000 bp to the present. He is employed at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia, and is on sabbatical as a University Research Associate in the Faculty of Arts/IMAS at the University of Tasmania, Australia.
